A mechanical engineer with a bachelor’s degree from Holland, Bastiaan Stor brings a unique perspective to jewelry design. Coupling innate artistic flair with the eye of an engineer, Bastiaan possesses a practical understanding of the importance functionality plays in crafting wearable jewelry. His core skill is transforming a designer’s creativity from a paper drawing into a functional piece of jewelry that not only looks great, but is also a pleasure to wear.
With a father travelling extensively for work, Bastiaan lived in seven countries growing up, travelling to many more. The legacy of these childhood experiences is an ingrained cultural sensitivity and fluency in five languages.
Living in Thailand for 17 years, Bastiaan worked in fire rescue for seven years before joining Thaigem.com. At its peak, Thaigem.com grew to become the Internet’s largest supplier of colored gemstones, the web’s biggest gem & jewelry store and one of Asia’s leading e-businesses. Successfully climbing a steep learning curve in a very short time, Bastiaan’s diverse duties laid a solid foundation for a successful jewelry career. These included direct European gemstone sales, tradeshows, managing jewelry manufacturing as well as marketing jewelry online.
Bastiaan left Thaigem.com to join CB Fine Jewelry in Bangkok, a manufacturer of fine quality vintage inspired mountings and jewelry. Here he was exposed to high-end jewelry for the very first time. Working there for one year managing customer accounts, Bastiaan helped grow the business via tradeshows and other promotional activities. Leaving CB Fine Jewelry, Bastiaan started his own jewelry design house, Fine Jewelry by Bastiaan, in 2005. With a workshop of four people including a quality goldsmith, setter, polisher and his brother-in-law for support, Bastiaan started with only a handful of clients. Through hard work, sincerity, solid product development and good quality, his business quickly grew through word of mouth. Seven years later, his business comprises of a staff of 18 plus a select group of specialist sub-contractors. Creating a niche market devoted to fine quality jewelry, his clientele includes jewelry designers in North America and Europe, jewelry stores in various countries, high-end wholesalers and private clients. His workshop’s key strengths are good quality craftsmanship, deft technical and product development, manufacturing analysis and consultancy.
Regularly working with Larry, Bastiaan was the only logical jeweler for LANCE FISCHER. Already very experienced with Zultanite®, he again relishes the opportunity to work with this phenomenal new gemstone.
